The Church of St. John of Nepomuk

The church is located in the city center

The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1845. As construction progressed quickly, the bells transferred from the castle chapel could already be hung on September 2, 1846, and they rang for the first time the following day. The church was consecrated with great ceremony on May 16, 1847 by Cardinal Friedrich of Schwarzenberg. The church was dedicated to St. John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of the Schwarzenberg family, and since then the St. John’s pilgrimage has been celebrated every year in Hluboká nad Vltavou on May 16.

In the 1990s, the church underwent a complete reconstruction. The ceremonial culmination of these long-term and costly repairs came in 2005 with the consecration of new bells cast by the Passau company Rudolf Perner. The trio of bells bears the names John of Nepomuk, Adalbert, and Wenceslas.
