The Aleš South Bohemian Gallery

The Aleš South Bohemian Gallery is the only art museum in the South Bohemian Region that ranks among the five largest institutions of its kind in the Czech Republic. It began opereting on January 1, 1953, and its name was named after Mikoláš Aleš (1853 - 1913).

Since April 1956, its main headquarters have been located in the former neo-Gothic hall of Hluboká nad Vltavou Castle (built in 1845 - 47 by Viennese architect Franz Beer, adapted in 1953 - 1955 by architect Jaroslav Fidra). In 1967, a branch was established - the AJG ceramics department, which is located in a converted building that was once the castle brewery in Bechyně.

Opened in České Budějovice (U Černé věže 22) in 1993 for exhibition purposes , the Wortner House AJG is a Gothic building rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the mid-16th century. The AJG's collections focus primarily on an extensive and renowned collection of Gothic art from Southern Bohemia and the Šumava region. This is complemented by works of Czech and European art from 16th to 19th centuries, including a remarkable collection of Dutch paintings. This collection of old masters is followed, in both quality and scope, by a significant collection of Czech modern and contemporary art. It includes nearly all important figures and artistic movements, with a particular emphasis on the fantastic line of artistic creation. The AJG International Museum of Ceramics in Bechyně collects modern Czech and international ceramics and porcelain, drawing from the results of the International Ceramics Symposia in Bechyně since 1966, as well as from its own acquisitions.
