Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Hosín

The original Church of St. Apostles Peter and Paul was built in the Romanesque style sometime between the second half of the 11th century and the end of the following century. The insufficient capacity of the building led in the 13th century to the construction of a new Early Gothic church. Further major modifications to the Hosín sanctuary took place during the Baroque period, when, among other things, a gallery for church music was built opposite the presbytery.

The large number of believers attending church celebrations here not only from the Hosín parish itself but also from other places led, at the end of the 19th century, to considerations about building a new, large representative church. The idea turned into action in February 1899. The Baroque-modified Gothic church was demolished and a massive pseudo-Romanesque building quickly began to rise in its place. However, the original Romanesque church (the sacristy) was not demolished. The builders incorporated it into the new structure as a side chapel on the eastern side. The new church was completed and consecrated as early as September 1900.

The pseudo-Romanesque church, built of yellow fireclay bricks and stone, is not oriented with its presbytery to the east, as is usual for most church buildings, but to the south. Its ground plan has the shape of an equal-armed cross with three apses at the end. On the eastern side, the sacristy adjoins the chancel. The western façade of the church is formed by an open vestibule decorated with the coats of arms of the former lords of Hosín. The church tower has a square ground plan and rises from the corner of the crossing of the naves to a height of 36 metres, while two small turrets decorate the northern façade of the church. The altar with a canopy, made of marble and sandstone, is dominated by the figures of the saints to whom the church is dedicated – the Apostles Peter and Paul.
