Kleť Observatory

Standing at 1,070 meters above sea level, Kleť Observatory is the highest observatory in the Czech Republic and is internationally renowned for its research on asteroids and comets. So far, 327 asteroids discovered at Kleť have been officially recognized by the International Astronomical Union, with reliably determined orbits.

South of the Kleť summit is the highest observatory in the Czech Republic, Kleť Observatory. Construction began in 1957 to allow for more advanced observations in a location with excellent climatic conditions, which had been used for astronomical purposes since the previous century. The 327 asteroids discovered at Kleť rank sixth in the world for officially confirmed discoveries. One of the discoveries is named after the town of Český Krumlov – asteroid number 2747 has a diameter of nearly 20 kilometers and completes an orbit around the Sun once every 5.48 years.
