Discover Medieval Romance at Karlův Hrádek

Karlův Hrádek is a romantic gothic hunting lodge ruin hidden in the forests on the left bank of the Vltava River. Founded in the second half of the 14th century by Emperor Charles IV himself, the small castle served as an administrative center for royal territory, a place of relaxation, and a base for noble hunts in the surrounding woods.

The original gothic structure was protected by a moat and drawbridge. Surrounding walls, remnants of the castle chapel, and a massive rampart with a moat survive to this day. A well-known legend tells of a wine cellar hidden beneath the castle, guarded by a large, fierce dog. Today, the site features information boards and a pleasant rest area with a fire pit.

How to Get to Karlův Hrádek 
Several routes lead to the ruins from both Hluboká nad Vltavou and nearby Purkarec.

From Hluboká nad Vltavou

• On foot or by bike: From the city center (Info Center), follow the red tourist trail along the paved cycle path by the Vltava. The route measures 10.2 km, taking about 40 minutes by bike or just under 3 hours on foot.
• Shorter option: Drive from Hluboká toward Hamry harbor along the road paralleling the cycle path to a small parking area with a shelter. Park here and continue on foot or by bike along the river (approx. 7.7 km).

• By car: Drive directly to the village of Purkarec to shorten the walking distance.

From Purkarec 

• This option is best for a shorter walk (Purkarec is 12.2 km from Hluboká).
• From Purkarec square: Park in the village square and follow the red tourist trail. The walk to the castle is approx. 2.3 km.
• From the edge of Purkarec: Park at the closest lot toward the castle for a short 1.5 km stroll.
