Monument to Záviš of Falkenstein

Czech nobleman from the Vítkovec family

Monument to Záviš of Falkenstein - Czech nobleman Záviš of Falkenstein of the Vítkovec family was probably executed by beheading on July 4, 1290, probably in a meadow on the right bank of the Vltava below Hluboká Castle. The monument was built by Prince Adolf Josef of Schwarzenberg in 1895.

At that time, there was a civil war with the Vítkovci in Bohemia. After a year and a half in captivity at Prague Castle, Záviš was brought to justice in 1290 and convicted. King Wenceslas used this to acquire South Bohemian castles under the control of the Vítkovci family. Mikuláš Opavský, who led the army sent against the rebellious Vítkovci, always forced the governors of the individual fortresses to extradite each of them under the threat of Záviš's execution. The situation escalated when Mikuláš's army stood in front of Hluboká Castle, defended by Záviš's older brother Vítek of Krumlov. Vitek did not intend to back down. However, the Royal Party was also not willing to negotiate - probably on July 4, Záviš was executed by beheading in a meadow on the right bank of the Vltava below Hluboká Castle.

Záviš's body was buried with the king's permission in the Rosenberg ancestral family in Vyšší Brod.
